According to the above physical principles, a beam of specific wavelength can be used to penetrate the leakage According to the degree of weakening of the methane air mass, the concentration of methane in the passed air mass can be measured, and it only responds to methane (the only selectivity).
In telemetry, the emitted beam passes through the leaking methane gas cloud and must be reflected by a reflective surface. After passing through the leaking methane gas cloud, the emitted beam must be reflected by a reflective surface, pass through the gas cloud again and return to the detector before the instrument is able to complete the measurement and output a unit concentration value.
Since the leaking methane gas cloud is dispersed by the wind, it is constantly changing and unevenly distributed in space and time; the distance of the instrument from the reflector is uncertain, and the thickness of the methane gas cloud is also uncertain. In order to be able to express the concentration values in this case, the concept of unit concentration (ppm.m) is commonly used in the industry and is expressed as: methane concentration (ppm) x standard thickness (1m).Unit Concentration"The meaning of 100 ppm.m is: 100 ppm evenly distributed on an air mass of 1 meter thickness of methane gas."
It can be approximated that the unit concentration is the straight line between the telemeter and the reflecting target. (Laser detection line) The concentration of methane molecules after they are uniformly "compressed" or "expanded" into a 1 meter thick area.
The instrument's measurement value for a methane air mass with a thickness of 5 meters and a concentration of 20 ppm on the detection line is 100 ppm.m, which is equivalent to the air mass being "compressed" to a thickness of 1 meter and a concentration of 100 ppm.
For an air mass with a thickness of 0.5 meters and a concentration of 200 ppm on the detection line, the measured value is also is 100 ppm.m, which is equivalent to the air mass being "expanded" to a thickness of 1 meter, with a concentration of 100 ppm.
The Laser Methane Telemetry is a gas detection device used to measure methane gas remotely. The equipment emits two laser beams, a green indicating laser pointing towards the detection area, accompanied by an invisible infrared laser. visible infrared laser can measure the unit concentration of methane gas present at a distance.(ppm.m).
